SARM, or Not? What is SR9009?

 

While often lumped into the category of SARMs, Stenabolic SR9009 is actually a natural molecule found in the body, called a Rev-ErbA ligand. It binds SR to the protein and increases activity in the body. SARMs on the other hand, are Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators, compounds that are similar to anabolic agents but with fewer androgenic properties.

What is a Rev-Erb Ligand… or SR9009?

SR9009 is a synthetic Rev-Erb ligand, developed under the leadership of professor Thomas Burris, by Scripps Research Institute. It’s a compound that is taken orally and in studies of animals for medical research purposes, it has been found to influence the reaction of regulatory mechanisms within the body, leading to weight loss and increased endurance. SR9009 studies show that it affects the circadian rhythms, fat-storing cells, and lip and glucose metabolism of test subjects. When Stenabolic binds and activates the Rev-Erb protein, the muscles increase the number of mitochondria and improve the overall rate of metabolism.

 

SR9009 Obesity Studies with Animals

In the Nature Medicine journal from March of 2012, Professor Thomas Burris described SR9009 as a compound that has been shown to decrease obesity in animal test subjects and synchronizes the body’s activity with the twenty-four-hour cycle of night and day.

The metabolism changes throughout the day naturally, slowing down and speeding up at various times. The body uses food for energy during times when the metabolism is working faster, and stores food as fat when the metabolism has slowed down. Obesity is the result of having a metabolism that isn’t fast enough to burn the food consumed as energy. When a dysfunctional metabolic clock is restored with SR9009, food and excess fat are then used as energy instead of being stored.

In a study, “Rev-Erb Modulates Skeletal Muscle Oxidative Capacity by Regulating Mitochondrial Biogensis and Autophagy”, conducted by two scientists and two authors in France, it was discovered that when mice lacked the Rev-Erb protein, they had decreased skeletal muscle metabolic activity and a reduced ability to run. But when treated with SR9009, the mice could run longer and further by as much as 50 percent.  The mice had developed muscles similar to that of athletes that had been training for a long time, even without exercise. The expression of genes after using SR9009 is similar to that of an athlete as well, with oxidative-type muscle.

These animal study findings could potentially result in new medicine that would assist overweight individuals who are unable to exercise to reduce their excess weight. Future testing of SR9009 will involve the potential of the compound in treating obesity, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and the typical problems of aging that results in reduced muscle capacity.

 

Mitochondria and SR9009

SR9009 in animal studies was shown to help replace defective mitochondria from the muscles with new and improved mitochondria. When mitochondria in the muscles increases, there is greater strength and endurance experienced. In the study involving mice where the mice ran 50% further and for a longer amount of time after using SR9009, researchers were lead to believe that the mitochondria in the muscles generate energy in the body.

SR9009 also increases the metabolic rate and energy expenditure by 5 percent even when the body is at rest. This helps prevent excess calories consumed from turning into fat on the body. When the body is storing less fat, then less cholesterol is developed by the liver, and the muscle burns more fat and glucose.
